music: zakk’s new tip

This week’s music itinerary introduces Canadian   singer Neil Young and his song “Heart of Gold” (1972), which is his only number one hit single in his long musical career.

One of the most difficult, enigmatic and unpredictable figures of the history of rock, Neil Young in fact never accepted the profit-making business behind the music industry.

“This song put me in the middle of the road. Travelling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride but I met more interesting people there.” (Neil Young)

However, with James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt singing backup, the song continues to be among the most requested and performed in concert. It has been played about 600 times from its publication!!

This song has been covered by a lot of artists, from Johnny Cash to Zakk Wylde, and its lyrics can be related to everyone´s experience.

My favourite line in this song is: “I crossed the ocean for a Heart of Gold“, because if a “heart of gold”  is our target, it may be very important for us to get it…and why not? We may even cross the ocean for it….
