We’re in Birmingham, in 1968. Can you hear this noise? No??? Are you sure you don’t hear anything? Well, it can’t be true because today I’m going to introduce “Black Sabbath” to you: Tony Iommi (guitar), Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Terry “Geezer” Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums and percussion).
Black Sabbath invented Hard Rock: black eyed men, long hair and “heavy”, metallic guitar riffs that carry you away… I’m sure that down in hell Mephistopheles plays Black Sabbath’s songs on his devilish guitar! Ozzy’s voice and Tony Iommi’s sound are like a label… it’s impossible not to recognize them. Their way of playing this music, full of anger and sorrow, can give us different emotions at the same time.
Today we are going to listen to the first track of their most popular album, called “Paranoid”, published in 1970. The song is “War Pigs” and, as the title already suggests, it is against war. Its lyrics, strict as truth and without schemes, are extremely strong and full of anger. Ozzy wants to be sure that his words reach the listener’s mind, and so the guitar riff underlines them after each stanza.
I don’t feel the need to interpret or say anything more about the song. I only say that when I hear this song I grab my guitar and play together with these black angels.
Let’s be carried down in the flames by the music! Rock on!
