Maypole dancing

A traditional May Day dance is Maypole Dancing. But what is it about?

Well, the maypole is a wooden pole that is stuck in the ground with many long coloured ribbons hanging down from the top. It is decorated with flowers and sometimes a May Day garland is put on top of it.

Accompanied by live folk music, people dance around the maypole celebrating the end of winter and the beginning of fine weather.

While they dance, they create a pattern with the differently coloured ribbons on the pole.

The result of this dancing is a beautiful plaited (=intrecciato) pattern of coloured ribbons around the pole.
