Famous roads in music: Penny Lane

Lots of songs contain the name of a street. We will consider some of them this week. One of the most famous is undoubtedly Penny Lane by the Beatles. Amazingly, the history of the Beatles seems to be strongly linked with roads! 🙂

In Penny Lane there is a barber

Of every head he’s had the pleasure to know.
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello.

Penny Lane is the name of a street in Liverpool, the hometown of the Beatles, where Paul McCartney and John Lennon usually met whenever they wanted to catch a bus to go to the centre of the city.

Thousands of “Penny Lane” street signs have been stolen by Beatles fans in all these years. And the same happened with the street signs of Abbey Road!!!

The number of street signs constantly disappearing in Liverpool was so high that the street name started to be painted on the sides of buildings until, more recently, theft-resistant street signs have been reintroduced.

Some are still stolen, though! 😉

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
