Waiting for Christmas: vocabulary list

Below is a list of some essential vocabulary for Christmas. The most obvious, like Christmas tree, reindeer and Santa Claus, have not been included.

Christmas carol a sacred plant for the Druids, it has evergreen leaves, white berries and small, yellow flowers. It is often used as a Christmas decoration.
Christmas cards a decoration consisting of shiny metal foil, traditionally used to decorate Christmas trees
Christmas cake children hang them in front of the fireplace to be filled with small presents usually opened on Christmas morning
trimming the tree a song sung at Christmas
stockings a paper tube that must be pulled at both ends and that when broken makes a sharp noise, like “crack!”. It contains a small toy.
mistletoe a traditional Christmas drink made of alcohol with beaten eggs and milk
tinsel a horse-drawn cart used over snow and ice
