Since school is about to end before the summer holidays, I thought: why not suggesting this film, that represents clearly (and ironically) the situation of the students? Maybe they could watch this film to mitigate their anxiety or simply to enjoy themselves.
The Machinist is a 2004 Spanish psychological thriller film directed by Brad Anderson and written by Scott Kosar, also known in Italy as “L’uomo senza sonno”. The protagonist, Trevor Reznik, performed by Christian Bale, is a mechanic who suffers from insomnia and his only friends are a prostitute, Stevie, and a waitress who works in an airport. After being involved in a car accident, strange events start to happen to Trevor until the end of the film.
The film is really dark, the main characteristic of a thriller, and never falls into trivial. Various hypotheses move us away from Trevor’s secret and his insomnia, until the dramatic turn of events.
- Christian Bale lost more than 27 kilograms for this role. He later regained the mass in preparation for his role in Batman Begins;
