I often think that each of us tries to show his personality in different ways. Some people paint, others write poetry, some people dance, but the easiest and most spontaneous way to show ourselves to the world is clothing. People have always cared about fashion and fashion has become an essential part of everyone’s life. But what is fashion?
’’Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Coco Chanel
Maybe Coco Chanel was right: it is impossible to limit the meaning of fashion. I personally think that it is one of the most beautiful forms of art in the world. Some people might accuse me of hedonism or aestheticism, but I give great importance to fashion and I want also to highlight the differences between fashion and massification.
Many people think that fashion is a unitary current that brings the most people to dress in the same way. Actually, fashion is very similar to style, as “fashion changes, but style endures.”
Style is the exact opposite of ‘common fashion’, style is subjective, unique and tied. It represents the interiority of the individual, which is expressed through a dress or a particular accessory. Many psychologists have argued that following fashion is in general an attempt to mask one’s personality and especially one’s faults and vices with a ‘shield material’: clothes should protect rather than simply “cover” the skin. Other intellectuals instead see fashion as a form of social captivity: man is forced to wear a “uniform” in which in most cases he does not feel at ease.
So what clothes should we wear? The only thing I can tell you is to find clothes that will represent your personality, clothes in which you feel at ease and feel good. As Anna Wintour says, “Create your own style … let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others“.
Some people have a metropolitan style, others are elegant and sumptuous, others simple and sporty. I prefer simplicity: as Oscar Wilde says’’ You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”
What is your favourite style? 😉
