Have you ever heard the name ‘Harlem Globetrotters’? No? Well, go on reading this post then!

These players are a way to laugh and to see spectacular basketball tricks. Let’s watch them! 😀

The Harlem Globetrotters is an exhibition basketball team that mixes sport and comedy, it is known throughout the world and these players are continually in  tour. They fans are of all ages and an incredible number of people goes to see their amusing shows when they play; in fact, during a match they do pranks, dances, play tricks on the other players and do ball handling wizardry of all kinds. It seems a team of circus performers, but they are also incredibly strong players.

Another enjoyable particular is the story of their birth; in fact this team was created in 1926 at the ‘Savoy Ballroom’ in Chicago! When the Savoy Ballroom was opened, a Polish businessman called Abe Saperstein had the idea to form a basketball team to perform this sport before dances. So Saperstein formed a team with five players that called the ‘Savoy Big Five’. Abe Saperstein was Jewish and all his players were African-American; in that period there were several racial laws and prejudices, and paradoxically players with a dark skin were excluded from the North American basketball and baseball championships. So in this historical context the Savoy Big Five team was also created like a protest against racism, and Saperstein decided to change the name of the team in ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ since all the players came from Harlem, a neighborhood of Manhattan in New York that at the time was considered the centre of African-American culture.

After twenty years, the team have played 3,000 games, and have toured the world to the present day. With their basketball records the Globetrotters have broken cultural and social barriers,  and they have entertained millions of fans with their funny performances.

The Harlem Globetrotters included some of the greatest basketball players ever, such as Wilt Chamberlain, Goose Tatum, Marques Haynes

For all these reasons this spectacular and crazy basketball team was included in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. The Globetrotters are famous all over the world and in their shows they involve the public, in particular children, in amusing pranks. They also do work for charity and they were rewarded by UNESCO thanks to their fight against racism and their help to the needy.

The Harlem Globetrotters also appeared in some famous TV series and animated cartoons like The Simpsons, Futurama, Scooby Doo and I, How Met Your Mother.

Here is another video about the tricks of these incredible players! Have fun! See you soon. 😉
